Steam-distillation is the single most effective way to protect yourself against biological contaminants (by far the most dangerous kind of contaminants). For this reason, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the American Red Cross, and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) all recommend steam-distillation as an acceptable method to purify water during a water emergency. The National Terror Alert also recommends steam distillation for microbiologically contaminated water. Filters, reverse osmosis, and ozone are not recommended because they can not offer adequate protection against biological contaminants as they require potable water as a starting point.
